Houses of worship were rarely the focus of security or crime prevention efforts - except those targeting hate crime - prior to the tragedy of 9/11.
Not too long ago a “house of worship” was considered a safe haven; a place to pray, a place of peace and a sanctuary for worshiping away from conflicts of the world. Today however, crime and violence have become far too prevalent and continue to breach our houses of worship.
Recent events only serve to highlight the security challenges faced by faith-based institutions who must balance their mission to be open and welcoming to the communities they serve, but also protective of their worshipers and ministry staff. Multiple prevention strategies provide defenses that protect people and assets, deter offenders and help to avoid a major incident against a house of worship.
Is your House of Worship secure?
You MUST ask the question.
Churches and house of worship are often soft targets, with missions and traditions that emphasize peace and welcoming. While most large faith-based institutions have addressed the issue of security and have the resources to implement protective measures, smaller assemblies do not. Moreover, the staff of faith-based institutions often lack in-depth training or experience in security and the legal landscape that surrounds protecting parishioners and a house of worship facility. For these groups, providing a starting point, direction, and resources can be invaluable.
Improve Church and House of Worship Security.
Religious leaders are often the most respected figures in their communities. Buddhist monks, imams, pastors, priests, pujaris, and leaders of all faith play a powerful role in shaping attitudes, opinions and behaviors because their members trust them. Community members and political leaders also listen to religious leaders.
At all levels, religious leaders have the power to raise awareness and influence attitudes, behaviors and practices. They can shape social values in line with faith-based teachings. That sometimes may be challenging when dealing with controversy and media.
