Protection Response Tactics (PRT) Modules 1-6

Course Description:

The Executive Protection Institute (EPI) and Alan Baker have developed a system of innovative and proven response measures designed to fulfill the unique requirements of the Personal Protection Specialist (PPS).

EPI's Protection Response Tactics (PRT) includes techniques from a variety of striking and grappling arts that will be beneficial to both the skilled operator and the novice.

PRT offers appropriate solutions to all levels of risk.

All countermeasures employed by professional bodyguards should reduce the risk to those they protect. The executive protection agent seeks to reduce the risk to the client by avoiding confrontation. If faced with confrontation, the professional bodyguard would prefer to evacuate the client.

Sometimes, avoidance does not work, sometimes evacuation is not the answer, and sometimes the appropriate countermeasure is the reasonable application of physical force. This system provides the tools necessary for that reasoned response.

With the increased popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), professional bodyguards face an opponent who has increased awareness and access to effective training. Despite proper preparations to avoid conflict, the professional bodyguard or personal protection specialist may be faced with a threat that requires immediate engagement.

PRT provides the tools and the training to reduce the risk by engaging the threat.

The Protector's ultimate goal is to reduce the client’s risk by using the appropriate response. Protection Response Tactics provides the tools and the training to give the protectors additional appropriate countermeasures to help keep their clients safe.

Module 1:

Personal Protection Specialists will learn the fundamentals of the PRT program – Physical and Verbal Posturing, Soft Control, and Hidden Force methods. You will learn to follow the PRT principles of using applications that are visually appropriate and socially executable. Everything you do in the PRT program will look appropriate to the situation you are dealing with. Learn to avoid overreacting with the incorrect level of force. PRT will teach you ‘soft control’ methods so you can deescalate and control any situation.

This module reviews the basic tools and mechanics needed to defend and protect a client from a low-level threat all the way up to a more aggressive threat. The material is taught on a force continuum that is appropriate for the protection agent and the various environments they work in. Due to the visual nature of some environments, it is important to understand the nature of lower-level controls and how to apply them so they will be effective as well as be able to read the body language of a threat and know when to respond with elevated force.

Module 2:

This module will introduce you to PRT’s Assault Tactics methods. You will:

  • learn to deal with higher levels of aggressive action from a single threat or multiple threats.
  • be introduced to the skills needed to fight off a vertical surface and from the numerous positions of the ‘around the world drill.
  • learn the multi-tool principle and how to use it to choose more intelligent and usable applications in a high-stress environment.
  • be introduced to the PRT’s predator mindset and how to connect to the switch to turn it on when it is needed in a high threat situation.

You also get into more advanced levels of ground fighting when forced to the ground and is being held. The second part of this module begins to introduce the environment around a vehicle and the various problems you may encounter as you move your principle in and out of the car. Students learn to use the car as a tool. All techniques are taught to be appropriate for the protection agent.

Module 3:

Module three of the PRT program will train you to deal with Halls, Walls, and Doors. You will learn the Vehicle Centric Defensive Tactics, a technique that teaches you to manage a threat or threats in and around a vehicle. In protection work, you spend a lot of time in and around vehicles. The vehicle is also one of the most common points of attach on the protector and their principal.

This module begins introducing the firearm into the previous material learned. you start to recognize and ingrain the needed reactions and techniques to respond to it. It also covers the principals involved with firearm disarming. We believe that you will develop a greater understanding using this educational process then just learning a list of techniques. Lastly, countermeasure for the knife is introduced into the module.

PRT Module Three will give you the tools you need to be comfortable in this environment regardless of what level of force you are dealing with.

Module 4:

In Module Four we review Counter Grappling and Ground Fighting – The protection agent does not want to get tied up in a grappling match on the ground when they are supposed to be protecting the client. The PRT counter grappling and ground fighting program will give you the skills to not only avoid getting pulled into a grappling match, but you will also learn to dish out enough destructive force to make the threat regret the attempt. This module also introduces the ‘primal environment principle’ and how you can use it to avoid wasting training time on things that are not effective.

Due to the popularity of grappling, the chances of the protection agent ending up on the ground are higher. The standard of the industry is to study grappling to counter grappling, this takes a great commitment from the protection specialist. This module is designed to give you a solid answer to counter this environment by using more of an anti-grappling mindset. It is the goal of the protection agent to end the encounter quickly, get back to your feet and back to the principal.

Module 5:

In Module five, you begin training PRT’s Firearm Disarming and Weapon Retention. At this level, PRT introduces weapons into the training to prepare you for the possibility of a threat implementing a weapon system. You will learn the principles of success needed to survive a weapon-based attack and we will give you what is necessary to apply the principles to multiple situations. This module DOES NOT just teach you techniques and send you back on your way. It will change the way you think and act when faced with a weapon-based attack.

Module 6:

Loosely defined, Pummeling is standing grappling. Any weapon retention or weapon disarm that goes in the wrong direction tends to end up in a standing grappling encounter. Due to this fact, understanding Hand fighting, Pummeling, and giraffe wrestling (control methods using the head and shoulders) are essential in the survival of this type of encounter. Learning gun disarm “Techniques” and gun retention “techniques” are a good place to start your training, Just like any child learning the beginning basics in kindergarten. But, if your program is not allowing you to graduate and grow past the basic “techniques” and start learning a more principle-based method, then your program is doing you an injustice.
